Sir Ken Robinson

Full notes from his session

Key points:
Kids learn voraciously. They learn because they are curious
Education is a more organised approach to learning.

Kids love to learn however they may have a problem with education.
Schools need to be a community of learning.

Let’s rethink school and the principles of learning.

We have all the resources we need to transform education but school systems are the problem. E.g. testing
great schools have the children designing, teaching each other

The aims of Education...
for students to understand the world around them and the talents within them so they can become fulfilled individuals and active compassionate citizens.

Our systems in education are broken. Focussed on yield!

schools need a vibrant culture, facilitating and encouraging miracles!!!

Weekly Tōtara Goal

Each week the team share a weekly goal that is from our 'Fully Engaged Tōtara Student' file.  This helps explicitly teach the skills/actions we expect to see from everyone in our community.  The attributes come under the heading Learning, Behaviour and Mindset/Attitude.  Some goals last for just a week, some last for a few weeks.  They are revisited when needed throughout the year.

Positive Communication with Whanau

Each term I track positive communication with Whanau.  This is done via email, text, phone calls and personal discussions.  The aim to interact positively with Whanau in Room 20, to ensure trust is built with home.  I aim to contact each home environment at least twice a term.

General feedback from parents when they receive a positive text or email is happiness and appreciation.
